Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions that we see here at SB Sports Massage & Rehabilitation. It has a high prevalence and recurrence rate. Globally the annual incidence is approximately 18% for neck pain.
What is Neck Pain and what causes it?
Neck pain is a pain in and around your neck, which is a common medical condition. Neck pain can be caused by a number of factors including: sitting at a desk all day, doing a lot of driving, whiplash, a neck injury and looking down at phones too much. The main cause of neck pain is when your neck is in a static position for a long period of time.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of neck pain can vary from person to person. Most common symptoms are:
- Dull ache around the neck area
- Sometimes the pain gets worse with movement of the neck or turning the head.
- You may also experience pain, pins and needles or numbness going down your arm and into your hand and fingers.
- Dizziness/ feeling light headed.
- Neck pain can also be accompanied by upper and/or lower back pain.
What is the treatment for neck pain?
The treatment for neck pain can differ from person to person and also depends on the precise cause. Treatment options include:
- Rest
- Hot/Cold therapy
- Gentle Movement
- Massage
- Mobilisations
- Exercise Rehabilitation
- Stretches
- Neck pillows
- Acupuncture
